Ubuntu is distributed on two types of images described below.

Setting up an Ubuntu virtual machine in Virtualbox is so easy, a caveman could do it (TM).:P Seriously. Watch the video to see how easy it is to setup. Yes, 32 bit images are still available for all Ubuntu and Ubuntu 'flavour' releases. (Although not necessarily for other distros based on Ubuntu - for example KDE Neon is 64 bit only.) They are a bit harder to find than I remember, though. I experienced the same problem while trying to install a 64-bit version of Linux Mint inside VirtualBox. I opened VirtualBox, clicked on NEW, entered a name for the virtual machine, choose the type of operating system, but when I wanted to choose a version, I only saw 32-bit versions and NO 64-bit versions as an option. If you are using the standard desktop iso and installing in virtual box you will have to run the commands sudo apt-get install virtualbox-guest-dkms. After this it will become usable. There are prebuilt virtual box images availible from many sites, but no 'offical image' so to say.

Desktop image

The desktop image allows you to try Ubuntu without changing your computer at all, and at your option to install it permanently later. This type of image is what most people will want to use. You will need at least 384MiB of RAM to install from this image.

64-bit PC (AMD64) desktop image

Choose this if you have a computer based on the AMD64 or EM64T architecture (e.g., Athlon64, Opteron, EM64T Xeon, Core 2). Choose this if you are at all unsure.

Virtualbox Ubuntu 32 Bit32-bit PC (i386) desktop image

For almost all PCs. This includes most machines with Intel/AMD/etc type processors and almost all computers that run Microsoft Windows, as well as newer Apple Macintosh systems based on Intel processors.

Server install image

The server install image allows you to install Ubuntu permanently on a computer for use as a server. It will not install a graphical user interface.

64-bit PC (AMD64) server install image

Choose this if you have a computer based on the AMD64 or EM64T architecture (e.g., Athlon64, Opteron, EM64T Xeon, Core 2). Choose this if you are at all unsure.

32-bit PC (i386) server install image
