And so while in theory something like an iPhone is great for watching videos on the move, in practice they'll need to be in something like M4V, MP4 or MOV formats, and getting your files converted can be a problem. But that's where HandBrake comes in.

The program accepts video data in just about any source format, including DVDs (as long as they're unencrypted: commercial DVDs can't be imported unless you install extra libraries).
You can then choose your output format (MP4 or MKV), and apply whatever additional tweaks you might need. Videos can be resized or cropped, for instance, filtered in various ways (deinterlace, denoise, deblock, more), you're able to choose the destination frame rate, or even set a target size for the converted file so you can be sure it'll fit on your target device.

Verdict:
HandBrake is an effective and highly configurable video converter. The interface can be intimidating, though, and you'll need some transcoding experience to get the best out of the program.

I had some people ask me what my HandBrake settings were…
If you don’t know what HandBrake is, this is an open source video transcoder – just a way to get your video files to a smaller size. For instance, if you have a Gigabyte file and you want to get it on the internet and have it play on multiple devices, this is what Handbrake is for. When you have a huge file, say 1.5 Gigabytes, you wouldn't want to try to upload that to the internet because it would take forever.

- Grab the source file. Choose a good destination. I usually add “-web” or “-converted” to the name so that I can tell which file has been converted.
- The first section is “Video.” Under the “Toggle Presets” button, under “Devices,” I like to choose iPad as my base settings and then edit it from there. I will uncheck “Large Video File” and check “Web Optimized.” Under “Format” it should be defaulted to the MP4 setting. Under “Video Quality,” select “Average Bitrate” and set it to 800. I also checkmark the “2-pass Encoding” and the “Turbo First Pass.” Checkmark the “Use Advanced Options.” Everything else can be set to default. (We have completed the first screen. You may want to pause the video above and take a screenshot.)
- The next section is “Audio.” I choose 128 for the bit rate.
- The next section I use is “Advanced.” Change “Reference Frames” to 4. Change “Maximum B-Frames” to 2. This will set your video up for optimized video settings. What I like to do now is make a preset. I will click on the “+” and I will name it “HD Settings Online.” I like the picture settings to be 1280×720, then click “Add.” This way, down on your presets, you will never have to do these again. You basically set them once, and then anytime you click source, you select the preset and it will change all your settings for you. You can also choose the gear button and make it your default if you would like, then these would be your settings for all your future videos. This makes my life a lot easier.
- Click start. The encoding bar will appear as soon as it is done. Then, you go over to where you saved the file. In the video example above, you can see that the video is now 24.4 MB instead of 1.6 Gigabytes. It will upload to the internet a lot faster and it is going to play on any device. People will enjoy your videos a lot more. You don’t lose any quality; it still is an HD size quality.
Handbrake Settings
If you have a MAC, you actually don’t need Handbrake. You can get software called Screenflow. Screenflow has the Handbrake settings built in. So, when you are exporting your file from Screenflow, click “Export” and you can change your customized settings. Click “Customize” and change the “Datarate” to 800 and the “Audio” to 128. All the other settings are already built in. Screenflow is amazing for video editing on MAC.
If you have a PC, I highly recommend that you edit all of your videos through Handbrake. I actually did Handbrake for over a year, even on MAC videos until I learned that Screenflow had it built in, so I don’t really have to use Handbrake any more.
The above settings for Handbrake will get you the highest quality, lowest file size that you can get.
